Midnight Sun Festival
Before the beginning of recorded time people have been celebrating the return of the sun. In the sub-arctic, the swift arrival of light culminates on June 21st, also known as summer solstice. Fairbanks, so subjected to the extremes of forty below and waning daylight for so many winter months, sees the summer solstice like few other locations on the planet. Thus downtown Fairbanks has become the wellspring of the biggest single day event in Alaska.
At noon, on Sunday, June 24th, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Avenues are closed to traffic and become pedestrian only. Booths go up, grills start cooking, music starts playing and sun seekers start heading downtown. Thousands and Thousands of visitors, families and friends, over 180 booths of arts, crafts, merchandise, information, food, and fun! Skateboarding, face painting, xtreme car racing, paddler’s river slalom race, break dancing, pony rides, vintage motors, BBQ cook-off, gold panning, break dancing, celestial shopping, fabulous food and so much more!
The kids search for snow cones and cotton candy, Dad hunts for the BBQ and Mom looks for the fresh squeezed lemonade, the day has begun. The positive energy is palpable.
