DOWNTOWN REVITALIZATION FACES WATERSHED DECISIONS
Vision Fairbanks is downtown’s master plan. The first two pieces of the plan will take definite shape this spring and early summer through the actions of the City Council, Borough Assembly and FMATS. Coming almost two years after the plan’s adoption, a series of votes and decisions will reveal our civic leaders’ attitude to economic development downtown. Restoring 2-way traffic circulation... STARFIRE, HUS-SKI, BLIZZARD AND POLARIS: ALL ARE WINNERS IN THE 2010 TIRED IRON
The Tired Iron proved to be one heck of an event! All these amazing vintage snow machines made it downtown for a weekend filled with racing, nostalgia and good old fashioned fun. The 2010 Classic first place winner was David Weaver on a 1972 Polaris Starfire 650. The winner of the Jurassic Classic was Michael Gonzales on a 1964 Hus-Ski 200A. The 2010 Wet Iron went to Robin Stenvik on a 1979 Ski-Doo... [Read more]
WHEN RIVERS BECOME ROADS
Radar Run, Wired Iron, Jurassic Classic, Wet Iron… What, might you ask, are all of these colorful words about? None other than the 5th Annual Fairbanks Tired Iron! The vintage snow machine race is back. Bigger, better than ever, and in a new location on the Chena River in the heart of downtown Fairbanks. The Tired Iron, celebrates the snow machine (the older the better), recognizes the many different... [Read more]
AND THE WINNER IS…HANS GATT!
Chills and tears or not, the 2010 Yukon Quest race turned out to be one, over the top, fantastic race. The first six mushers to arrive in Whitehorse (that’s right the first SIX) beat Sebastian Schnuelle’s 2009 Quest record of 9 days 23 hours and 20 minutes. The winner, Hans Gatt, of the Yukon Territory, came in at a smoldering 9 days and 23 minutes, almost a full day faster than the Schnuelle’s... [Read more]
MAY THE WIND ALWAYS BE AT THEIR BACKS…
I have a confession to make….a chill went down my spine and I felt like I was on the verge of tears at the start of the Yukon Quest. I guess it is the age old feeling of embarking on a long and tremendous journey that tugged on my heartstrings and made me feel like I was bearing witness to something unusual, something larger than life. Something Great. You know how in those spectacular turn of... [Read more]
64 YEARS
64 years is a long time. The Open North American Sled Dog Race has been around for just that, 64 years. Fairbanks has been home to sled dog racing since the turn of the century. A myriad of interesting races came stayed for awhile evolved into something new or expired altogether. The Open North American Sled Dog Race was born in the aftermath of World War II and is still going strong. This year, 2010,... [Read more]

CITY TO HEAR POLARIS PLAN
Opposite the gleaming State Court building, the moldering Polaris has long eluded revitalization or demolition. The City Council will hold a work session with the Polaris’ new owner Marc Marlow to review his plan to refurbish the Polaris. The meeting will be February 8th at 6 PM in Council Chambers at City Hall and is open to the public. Taking into account current and desired future uses downtown,... [Read more]
DOWNTOWN WELCOMES ALASKA’S SIGNATURE EVENTS IN FEBRUARY
Downtown is already Fairbanks’ ‘living room’, seat of signature events, site of our pioneer history and showroom of our community character. And downtown is getting even better. To kick-off a fantastic February, the Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race starts on the Chena River in downtown... [Read more]
